Service

Our principles:

  • Our training aids are visual, inviting and clear.

  • We train only on the knowledge and skills that are relevant to workplace performance. Everything else is eliminated.

  • Our training goal is nothing less than mastery of critical job skills.

  • Where possible, we support training in the work setting, not in the classroom.

  • We remove subjectivity from the evaluation process.

We can help your workforce excel

We’ve been developing custom support for work roles for nearly 20 years, for front-line workers, technicians, supervisors, planners and managers.

PERFORMANCE-BASED LEARNING

We share our methodology
The goal is to make the learner competent. The course objective is always the same: The learner can perform, like an expert, without assistance.

performance chart.jpg

Most learning is what we call norm-based, where the goal is to rank the learner relative to a group average. Learners are graded (A, B, …F) relative to each other. Norm-based training tends to be instructor-led, sometimes with a wordy textbook. Quite often, grading is subjective.

The advantages of Performance-based learning include:

  • Learners master necessary job skills as part of the training process

  • Skills are emphasized over knowledge

  • New trainees can perform like experts while in the process of becoming experts

  • Training is both more engaging and takes less time

  • Interesting “nice to know” content is mostly eliminated

  • Learning at different paces is fairly easy to accommodate

  • Effective learning does not depend on the star qualities of the instructor

Performance-based Learning

Let’s be sure.

Training is a means to an end, not an end in itself. What clients really want is higher productivity, better service, less waste, or fewer errors. Training only provides skills and knowledge–but what if employees already have skills and knowledge?

Maybe good performance isn’t rewarded. Maybe associates aren’t aware of the targets they’re supposed to meet. Maybe they don’t have important information at their fingertips, or have to cope with cumbersome processes. Deficiencies like these can break a training program.

“We need training...”

When clients call us, they usually know what they want: to raise productivity, improve service, reduce waste, implement the new system, make the new product. They say, “We need training!”

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

The performance equation

Here are four major factors that shape how people perform in the workplace:

Performance.jpg

If any of these factors are close to zero, the result will be close to zero, no matter how good the existing skills and knowledge are, and no matter how good the training is.

Luminance can conduct a Performance Opportunity Analysis to ensure all factors are addressed so the desired results can be achieved. We follow a disciplined process to gather, sift, sort and weigh the evidence and the requirements for the four performance factors. We’ve helped numerous clients de-bottleneck their workplace performance problems.
